THE STORY
Named for owner David Gelston Floyd’s
ancestral home of Brecknockshire, Wales, Brecknock Hall was
constructed between 1851 –1857. A grandson of William Floyd,
a signer of the Declaration of Independence, David Floyd established
his own track record of success as a shipping magnate, whaling
fleet owner, bank president and legislator.
Brecknock Hall was Floyd’s family
residence, and leftover stone was used to build Floyd Memorial
Library in Greenport Village. A recent restoration project
spearheaded by the Brecknock Hall Foundation has given new
life to this historic gem, Long Island’s most magnificent
example of 19th century Italianate stone architecture. The
transformed Brecknock is now open and available to the public
as a resplendent site for weddings, celebrations, corporate
retreats, cultural events and educational programs.
